Meet Valerie D. Porter

Valerie D. Porter created Afstar Associates, LLC in the hope of empowering senior citizens and veterans who feel technologically left behind so they can become connected to the current digital blueprint and regain their independence. 

Valerie has a successful career as an information technology professional and consultant for small businesses and corporations.  She is a graduate of East Orange High School where she received the most college scholarships out of her entire Senior class. She is a graduate of Drexel University with a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Computer Systems Management.

Valerie is a successful graduate of the Intensive Rising Tide Capital Entrepreneurial Program which was endorsed by President Barack  Obama. Under her leadership, Afstar Associates has sought and obtained a US Small Business Administration 8(a) Certification,   New Jersey Transit Certification, Port Authority of New York and New Jersey Certification, New Jersey Department of Transportation Certification and City of Philadelphia Office of Economic Opportunity Certification. Ms. Porter is a Dell Business Partner and a Certified Business Analyst Professional.

 

My Why

When my Aunt Ruth introduced me as a computer expert to her friends who lived in her senior citizen building, they began asking questions and wanting my help with their computers and cell phones. I realized there was a need for technical assistance for seniors. Thereafter, Afstar computer, cell phone and tablet training for seniors was born.  I felt the sincerity of the seniors wanting to learn, so with my passion for technology and teaching, Afstar has been divinely guided to assist Seniors and Veterans to learn technology, become independent and feel happy to be connected to the digital world. 

 

They learn to get past their FEAR of technology in a caring environment. They learn to go beyond the “appearances” of things they thought they couldn’t do. 

 

Growing up in a single parent home, I learned the importance of building trust and honest communication with others to establish caring relationships. Our students meet new people, have fun and bond in class. They build their relationships with family, their grandchildren and friends using technology. After experiencing our training, they realize they are never too old to learn, and they go further to achieve other dreams and goals they always wanted to do in their lives. 

 

When I see their faces light up when they understand a concept, it feels like it’s Christmas morning and they’re opening gifts. It gives me so much joy!  This is my why – to help Senior and Veterans learn technology, use it to improve their overall well being and enhance their quality of life.

OUR HISTORY

Serving the community for over 18 years.

  • Afstar Associates was founded in 2003 to provide certified business analysis professional solutions for small businesses and major corporations and computer training for Veterans and adults. In 2009, we began working with the Dept. of Veteran Affairs to train returning vets. In 2013, we expanded our offering to train Seniors. To achieve this, we work with various clients and individuals.
